Success Story

From Home Craft to Rural Enterprise: Bhawana’s Journey of Growth

In the quiet lanes of her village, Bhawana had nurtured a home based wool craft business for nearly seven years, a small but deeply passionate venture through which she dreamt of uplifting her family and creating opportunities for other women. What began as a deeply personal pursuit soon grew into a dream far larger than herself: to strengthen her family’s income and create meaningful work opportunities for other
women in her community.

But like many rural women entrepreneurs, Bhawana faced invisible barriers. Limited capital, lack of formal registration, and absence of business systems kept her enterprise confined within the walls of her home, despite her skill and determination. The course of Bhawana’s journey took a transformative turn when she received the Rs. 1 lakh seed grant under the Grameen Heroes initiative, a turning point that gave her work structure, dignity, and direction. The grant gave her business not just financial support, but structure, credibility, and a clear path forward. She invested in essentials that mark the transition from informal work to formal enterprise: GST registration, bill books, name tags, a business stamp, and high-quality wool and raw materials.“That grant didn’t just provide money, it gave my work a new direction,” Bhawana shares with pride.

For the first time, she travelled outside her state to present and pitch her business on a platform created by ABWCI. The experience expanded her confidence, visibility, and aspirations, helping her see herself not just as a craftswoman, but as an entrepreneur. Today, Bhawana’s enterprise expanded her operations with a team of 15-30 women from her village, providing them with income, skills, and a sense of collective pride. As her business grew, so did her recognition. What was once viewed as a small household activity is now respected as a thriving rural enterprise, and Bhawana herself is recognised as a business leader within her community.

As her enterprise grew, so did her visibility, people in the village began recognising her as a business leader. What was once viewed as a small household craft is now respected as a thriving rural enterprise, strengthening her sense of purpose and encouraging more women to join her journey.

“I want my toys and products to reach places far beyond this village,” she says, her voice filled with hope. “And I want more women to grow with me.”

Her journey stands as a testament to what rural women can achieve when they are trusted, supported, and given the tools to rise.

Bhawana’s story is a powerful reminder of what rural women can achieve when they are trusted, supported, and given the right tools to succeed. When you uplift one woman, she creates pathways for others – extending opportunity, dignity, and financial security beyond her own household.
