In the outskirts of Dehradun, Farjana has been cultivating dhingri (oyster mushrooms) and button mushrooms with remarkable dedication , carefully managing temperature, moisture, and hygiene to produce high-quality yields year round. Yet despite her skill, her enterprise remained very small, limited by inconsistent resources, low capital, and the challenge of working almost entirely alone. With just one or two helpers, she struggled to meet demand and dreamed of expanding her production, creating jobs, and diversifying her products. But without financial support, her ambitions remained out of reach.
That reality began to change when she received Rs. 25,000 grant through the Grameen Heroes initiative. With this support, Farjana scaled up her mushroom production, improved her processes, and invested in new inputs that immediately strengthened the foundation of her enterprise.
What followed was a transformation. The impact was immediate and tangible. Her team expanded from just 1–2 people to 5–10 women. The grant also allowed Farjana to add new product lines, including homemade pickles and mushroom powder, diversifying her offerings and making her business more resilient. With each new product, she grows more confident, not just as an entrepreneur, but as a leader who is helping her community embrace self-reliance. “Hum sab atmanirbhar ban rahe hain,” she says with pride.
Farjana dreams of scaling her enterprise further, opening doors for even more women to join her. Her journey is proof that when rural women are given the space and support to grow, they create economic opportunities far beyond their own homes.
